\u201cMaya would be so proud of you.\u201d\u00a0 These are the words that two teens, who I had never met before shared with me during a brief interaction. \u00a0These are the words that brought a lump to my throat and then the tears.\u00a0 Were the sentiments behind these words, \u201cthank you.\u00a0 Your work is helping us.\u00a0 It is helping many\u201d?<\/p>\n

We were at the last event of the Maya Gold Foundation for the fall.\u00a0 It was a deeply moving presentation. \u00a0It was one in which the presenter, Mykee Fowlin<\/a>, masterfully peeled off the masks that we all carry around.\u00a0 He subtly wove in lessons of hope.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t clobber the audience over the head; yet my sense is that the teens especially, walked away, knowing that there is support out there.\u00a0 Belief in oneself and seeing the light in others were also part of the tapestry.\u00a0 A golden thread for me was the metaphor Mykee used in talking about the pearl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it that makes a pearl?\u201d Mykee asked the audience.\u00a0 Everyone chimed in, \u201ca grain of sand.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, not exactly. \u00a0That is what everyone thinks.\u201d\u00a0 It is the painful process that comes from the irritant (of the sand) that makes the beautiful gem.<\/p>\n

I have truly been throwing myself into the work that has been presented to me at this time.\u00a0 Yes, some of the work has been the co-creation the Maya Gold Foundation.\u00a0 My profound work has been the process of going into the seemingly bottomless depths of the pain.<\/p>\n
