At the end of the Maya Gold Foundation\u2019s first board meeting, we did a closing activity in which each director shared both a heart and a head connection.\u00a0 One board member shared, \u201csince Maya\u2019s death, I have\u2026we all have wanted to do something.\u00a0 I feel a sense now, that we will be doing something.\u201d\u00a0 I think that he was speaking for us all.\u00a0 I left with such a full heart.\u00a0 That is nothing new.\u00a0 My heart has been so full since October 2nd<\/sup>.\u00a0 But the fullness now is one of hope.<\/p>\n

The mission of the Maya Gold Foundation is to empower youth to access their inner wisdom and realize their dreams.<\/p>\n

Each word was carefully selected.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 I thought I\u2019d share with you the creative process in which we came to our mission.\u00a0 It was a product of one of our nine-hour car rides during the fall when we were visiting Adin.\u00a0 The hundreds of words that started on my clipboard from the car ride rolled over to a session, into what we claimed as our \u201cfirst board room\u201d at a hotel which will remain undisclosed.\u00a0 Mathew and I found an empty conference room with a screen.\u00a0 Fortunately, Mathew travels with a laptop and a projector.\u00a0 We actually had fun culling down these words to capture the essence of what the foundation in Maya\u2019s name would achieve.\u00a0 Since we worked on the mission, it has remained a dream.\u00a0 After spending six hours with 11 wise, committed, loving people, my sense is that a reality will unfold.<\/p>\n

One of our first steps will be to hear from teens themselves.\u00a0 After all, this is really the first step of empowerment, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Hearing a voice and responding; plans are underway for young adults to conduct focus groups for the teens.\u00a0 Other ideas emerged including art projects with a social message, music too, service opportunities and offering healthy physical outlets.\u00a0 We\u2019re aware that there is \u201cno one size fits all model\u201d.\u00a0 Presentations and workshops for adults, partnerships with organizations that are doing great work are all on our agenda.\u00a0 We\u2019ve already made some connections with NGO\u2019s that serve children in Nepal.\u00a0 This is all occurring as an amazing team of volunteers are preparing a spring fundraising concert.\u00a0 Another one is in the works for the fall.\u00a0 Inspired is the word.<\/p>\n
