Sweetest Maya<\/p>\n

Saying farewell to ten!\u00a0 It\u2019s been quite a year and quite a month.\u00a0 Lots to report, but no time now. \u00a0Amidst a power outage, no electric, no lights, no water, no phone.\u00a0 A bit challenging but all is well.\u00a0 Just landed from Europe last week and we\u2019re escaping to the New Jersey shore tomorrow.\u00a0 [The birthday party that had been planned was postponed.]\u00a0 More to share but must sleep before our big trip.\u00a0 I just didn\u2019t want to miss an entry in this journal before the month came to a close.<\/p>\n

September 1, 2011<\/p>\n

Dear Maya,<\/p>\n

Since nine hours ago, plans have changed.\u00a0 You came into our room at 11:30 at night in tears.\u00a0 Two things were on your mind and weighed heavy in your heart.\u00a0 The first was that you did not want to go to the beach; you just wanted to stay home.\u00a0 The second was that you don\u2019t want to grow up.\u00a0 The first one is easy.\u00a0 We will not go to the Jersey Shore.\u00a0 I must honor your need to be home.\u00a0 Though you expressed this feeling about our trip to Europe, we did not honor it.\u00a0 Plans were made and we went.\u00a0 We could not leave you home.\u00a0 You rallied and I think you had a great time.\u00a0 But in the end, your heart was here, at home.\u00a0 Now, it is much easier.\u00a0 Yes, it is challenging to be home without electric.\u00a0 But after all, it is your birthday.\u00a0 You should get this request honored.\u00a0 Wish granted, my dear!<\/p>\n

Now for the not-growing up piece.\u00a0 In certain ways, we cannot do anything about this.\u00a0 And, I completely get it.\u00a0 You like being who you are now.\u00a0 Recently, you\u2019ve been faced with challenges of getting older.\u00a0 Middle School starts in a few days.\u00a0 Learning lockers, different classrooms, teachers for different subjects\u2026it is a lot to negotiate.\u00a0 You love being young and who you are.\u00a0 I shared with you a few little pearls that I hope you can hold on to.<\/p>\n
