I never know when the wave will hit.\u00a0 Tonight, I made pesto the first time this season.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of my all-time favorite foods.\u00a0 Each year, I freeze gallons (really) to get me through the winter, until basil is fresh again.\u00a0 In recent years, I\u2019d make two batches to sustain us; one dairy and one non.\u00a0 I\u2019d store the vegan variety in smaller containers.\u00a0 I would always say that, \u201cMaya chose our family well. \u00a0If she had to be a vegan with anyone, we were a good choice.\u201d\u00a0 I also would make comments about how she \u201cone-upped us.\u201d It was not enough to be a lifelong vegetarian.\u00a0 She really needed to live her values to the max.\u00a0 She lived her life to the max.\u00a0 That was Maya.\u00a0 That is Maya, still, somehow.<\/p>\n

As I was processing the basil leaves, tears welled up.\u00a0 As the reggae music that I had hoped to dance to changed its tune to \u201cThree Little Birds,\u201d (the song that goes, \u201cdon\u2019t you worry, about a thing\u2026every little thing, is gonna be alright\u201d) was blasting, the tears went from welling up to flooding out.\u00a0 Every little thing is NOT alright!\u00a0 Oh, what I would do to fill the freezer with vegan pesto again; to fill it for our Maya.<\/p>\n
