In honor of Maya\u2019s birthday, I’m posting two journal entries and extra photos from September 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. \u00a0Happy Birthday, Maya!<\/p>\n

October 8, 2002<\/p>\n

Maya, I am struck by the love I have for you.\u00a0 It is unbelievable.\u00a0 Thanks for giving me the opportunity to feel love in this way!<\/p>\n

September 2005<\/p>\n

Maya dear one,<\/p>\n

Precious, bittersweet\u2026these are words that come to mind about you turning five.\u00a0 On your birthday, as we were driving to the party, I had a John McCutcheon tune playing.\u00a0 I cried tender tears as we were listening and singing along:<\/p>\n

It makes me think of the good ol\u2019 days<\/em><\/p>\n

Happy birthday to you<\/em><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve sure grown out of your baby ways<\/em><\/p>\n

Happy birthday to you<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s your birthday, we wish you many more<\/em><\/p>\n

Health and wealth and friends by the score<\/em><\/p>\n

Cut the cake, let\u2019s eat some more<\/em><\/p>\n

Happy birthday to you!<\/em><\/p>\n

There\u2019s something so poignant about five.\u00a0 You are moving out of early childhood into another phase.\u00a0 One huge landmark is starting school. \u00a0Now this in and of itself is HUGE.\u00a0 It means moving away from innocence.\u00a0 The influences away from home and our smaller circles will be stronger.\u00a0 Not to mention, school and formal education will be a major part of your life for the next decade or so!<\/p>\n

\"IMG_1136\"<\/a><\/p>\n

So far, the journey witnessing you has been amazing.\u00a0 Part of bearing witness means letting go.\u00a0 This has been a challenge.<\/p>\n

Let me share a few snippets from your birthday\u2026<\/p>\n

The party was a success.\u00a0 The largest you\u2019ve had.\u00a0 18 children attended.\u00a0 The party was held at Moriello Pool, a glorious day, though a bit windy.\u00a0 Aside from swimming and eating, we had a project of making rock sculptures from rocks we collected in Maine.\u00a0 Children LOVED this.<\/p>\n

Lighting the cake candles was impossible.\u00a0 I made many attempts, and the wind was too strong.\u00a0 We had to accept that there would be \u201cpretend lights\u201d that you blew out.<\/p>\n

\"110_1022\"<\/a><\/p>\n

When we returned home, you opened presents without the guests in attendance.\u00a0 You were in your glory from the party time, straight through the presents.\u00a0 You were thrilled and on a cloud.\u00a0 Just glowing.\u00a0 I know that you felt the love coming from your friends and family.\u00a0 We all got a laugh or two while you were opening your gifts.\u00a0 Jonathan and Jo gifted you with a gift certificate from Ariel Bookstore.\u00a0 It came in the form of a gift card.\u00a0 When opening it, you were in disbelief and amazement, \u201cI never had a credit card before!!!\u201d you exclaimed.\u00a0 Our family was in stitches.<\/p>\n

Later, you were on the phone with Uncle Nick.\u00a0 You share his birthday.\u00a0 We were listening to your side of the conversation:<\/p>\n

\u201cHow was your party?\u201d<\/p>\n

Pause<\/p>\n

\u201cYou mean; you didn\u2019t have a party???\u201d<\/p>\n

Pause<\/p>\n

\u201cYou went to a meeting???\u201d<\/p>\n

Again, we were hysterical.\u00a0 For you, birthday and party are synonymous.<\/p>\n

Anyway, my little love, know you are much loved!<\/p>\n
